Course content: The course gives an overall picture of the United Nations organization and functions. Also the history of the UN and its role are discussed. The general goal of this course is to familiarize students with the United Nations. During this course, students will develop an understanding of both the history, financing and membership of the UN as well as the structure of the UN System, including the principal UN bodies and affiliated agencies. Students will also explore the main activities of the UN in its five primary thematic fields: International Peace and Security, Economic and Social Development, Human Rights, Humanitarian Action, and International Law. Last, students will also examine the UN Reform process, and critically evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the UN system.
Learning methods: Independent virtual study by using given readings and internet-based material links, discussions, short assignments quizzes and essays.
Objectives:
- to become conversant with the history and organization of the UN
- to acquire the basic knowledge about the UN agencies and their activities
- to become familiar with the current discussion of UN Reform
Study material: Provided during the course.
Assessment: grade 0-5. The final mark will be based on the written assignments and essays as well on the participation in the discussions.
