Course content:
This course aims to offer practical insights into project management in the field of international development and cooperation. The course provides an overview of management principles in line with development policies and strategies, and introduces students to key management tools and participatory methods used in practical development work.

Objectives: 
Broaden and deepen students’ understanding of key management concepts and models in development projects.
Introduce practical management tools such as the Logical Framework Approach (LFA) as well as participatory methods used in development projects.
Adopt a critical approach to hands-on management concepts and tools.
Strengthen students’ professionalism and competency in development management.

Learning methods:
Student-centered learning dialogue in the Optima learning environment, learning by reflection resulting in a final report.
Study materials: Video and audio lectures. Learning materials and texts related to lectures will be available on the Optima course management system.

Assessment:
Grade 0-5. The final mark will consist of an evaluation of weekly critical reflections (20%), active participation (20%) and the final reflective report (60%).

Additional information:
The course is targeted at students of international relations or development studies, as well as practitioners in the NGO or development field. It is also a mandatory course for students taking part in Master’s Programme in Development and International Cooperation at the University of Jyväskylä, Finland.
