Course Content: International development is a relatively new concept rooted in a long history of thought that has shaped our current understanding. This course examines the evolution of what has been understood as development. Current development theory will be situated into this history to give students perspective and the necessary tools to understand and approach development analytically. This course lays the foundation for development in practice.
Learning Methods: Student centered learning dialogue in the Optima learning environment, participatory learning and problem based learning.
Objectives:
- Introduce the concept of international development and explore its various meanings and contexts.
- Broaden and deepen students’ understanding of development theory.
- Give students the tools to critically analyze and understand the reasoning behind development practice.
- Create a theoretical framework to understand development in its current forms.
Study material:Video lectures, learning materials and texts related to video lectures will be available on the Optima course management system.
Assessment: Grade 0-5. The final mark will consist of an evaluation of weekly critical reflections (25%), active participation (25%) and a final essay (50%).
